Built-in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula, Bara Imambara is one of the largest buildings in Lucknow. Its name is an Urdu word, ‘bara’ means big and ‘imambara’ means the shrine complex. This shrine has the Asfi mosque and the bhulbhulaiya (labyrinth). This Asfi mosque houses Asaf-ud-daula’s tomb and the only maze or bhul bhulaiya in India. Visit the Imambara to see the labyrinth supporting this massive structure of the entire complex from the underground.
Another Muslim complex is the Chota Imambara which was built by Nawab Muhammad Shah Ali in 1838. It has the tomb of the Nawab who was buried inside Chota Imambara along with his mother. Just outside the complex, you will see 4 stories Satkhanda. It is an incomplete watchtower that originally was built for 7 stories but never got completed. Nawab Muhammad Shah Ali wanted to build a tower as tall as the Qutub Minar and design it like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
British Residency is one of the major attractions of the Revolt of 1857 and the historic battle called the Siege of Lucknow. It is also known as a National Monument. British Residency was the house of British General which was attacked during the dispute. Today, this structure is in absolute ruins but has been preserved till date. You can witness the bullet grazed walls and gardens all around that also attracts a lot of tourists.

Rumi Darwaza is an iconic landmark of Lucknow which is also known by the name ‘Turkish Gate’. It was constructed in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula. It is a massive monument gateway which is one of the best examples of Awadhi Style of architecture. The extensive monument’s design is very often compared to Rome and the Ottoman Empire.
