About Chandigarh

The Chandigarh union territory was constituted on November 1, 1966, when the Indian Punjab was reorganized along linguistic lines into two new states--predominantly Hindi-speaking Haryana and Punjabi-speaking Punjab. The city of Chandigarh, which lies between Haryana and Punjab was made the joint capital of both the states and the territory.

The 1986 Punjab Accord stipulated that the entire territory of the union would be incorporated into Punjab. However, the Punjabi-speaking, agriculturally productive areas of Fazilka (and Abohar) were to be transferred to Haryana. This plan was not realized until the beginning of the 21st century.

The Modern City and Territory

With its well-developed infrastructure, Chandigarh covers more than half the territory. It is made up of over 50 rectangular sections, separated by wide streets that carry the city's arterial traffic. The city's main government buildings can be found in the north. The industrial areas are located in the southeast, separated from residential areas by a greenbelt with man trees. Electronics, pharmaceuticals, and ceramic plumbing fixtures are the main industries in the city.
